Spiritual Friendship / Community Group

The Weekend Spiritual Friendship / Community Group meets monthly on the 4th Saturday (03/27) at 10:30 am at the meetinghouse. The group is mainly meant as a way to build community, spiritual support, and share our spiritual journeys and questions about spirituality. This is an open group for anyone who is affiliated with Annapolis Friends Meeting. Currently, the meeting is held in-person, only, due to technical difficulties. The AFM in-person guidelines will be required to reduce the risk of coronavirus infections, including wearing masks, and maintaining social distancing.

Meetings for Learning

On March 28th at 9:15 am the Ministry & Worship Committee will be presenting the third in the series of the Introduction to Quakerism and the topic will be Contemporary Friends and Theological Diversity. There will be a lecture, video and slides for this presentation, as well as a question & answer session. Both newcomers and experienced Friends are welcome to join us for the last of three Meetings for Learning in our current Introduction to Quakerism series.  For March 28th, the session will cover a variety of questions, such as: How has the balance between Scripture, community, tradition and mysticism shifted over the years, and where are we now? What different forms does 21st Century Quaker worship take, in North America and beyond? Where do Quakers overlap with other forms of worship? If you would like to prepare by watching the video we’ll use, here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnETl4i4prg

Friends Writing Together

At 12:30pm on Sunday, March 28th, Friends Writing Together allows us to indulge our creative selves and let words pour from our deepest places. What arrives may be a funny or poignant memory, a work of fiction, new lyrics or a poem, often surprising us with where we have been led. During the gathering, writing prompts are offered which begin the flow, and we write for 8 minutes. We then have the option to share our writing with the other participants, who offer not critique, but what moved them. We are a warm, welcoming group, so if you would like to put pen to paper or fingertips to keyboard, join us.

For more information, contact Dotty D., at info@annapolisfriends.org.

Reminder – Easter (April 4th)!

The 4th Month Meeting for Worship (MfW) with Attention to Business (wAtB) will be held on April 11th at 9:15 am, instead of the usual 1st Sunday at 9am. The change was approved at the 3rd Month MfW wAtB, so that Friends can celebrate Easter on the 1st Sunday of April (04/04/2021) . The change in start time is designed to provide a bit of break between Early Worship and the MfW wAtB. Potluck will be held on the 11th, too.

For more information, contact Martha B. at clerk@annapolisfriends.org.

April 4, 2021 is Easter and the Ministry & Worship (M&W) Committee has the following offerings:

  • 6:30 am (15-mins before sunrise)
  • 8:00 am, MfW – in-person with registered Friends
  • 11:00 am, MfW with two options: 1st with Zoom and 2nd in-person with registered Friends

Quaker Voice of Maryland

Updates for Week 10:

  • Cross-over Day is coming! – The push to get bills scheduled for a vote prior to “crossover day” (3/22) was on. Quaker Voice had our working group meeting on Friday and updated our priority bill list with voting dates and general bill updates; this list will continue to be updated as the session continues.

  • Police Accountability Legislative Townhall – March 17th @ 8PM – Members of Quaker Voice joined our partner organization MD Coalition for Justice & Police Accountability for a townhall on Wednesday night to get updates on the status of legislation. If you weren’t able to attend the event was recorded and is available to stream on the MCJPA Facebook page.

  • Climate Solutions Now – Things looking up in the House – A recent update from Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) shares that things are looking up for this climate bill in House committees. After getting a favorable vote out of the Senate there were some sticking points when it came to House leadership, but now they are starting to signal they are also in favor – wow!!! Our message continues to be vote YES on HB583!

Updates as we look forward to Week 11 (3/22-3/26):

  • Quaker Voice Conversations – Preparing for Cross-Over Day (Link): Cross-over day is an important milestone in the General Assembly for advocates; check out this conversation between Molly Finch and Erinn Camp Mansour about what changes and what may stay the same when it comes to bill advocacy pre- and post- cross-over.

  • Action Alert (Link): This week we are joining on to ACLU action alert to urge lawmakers to pass the strongest Police Accountability Bill possible; if you haven’t yet use their action alert to send a message directly to your legislators or as a script if you prefer making a call.

  • House Judiciary Committee voting on Senate Police Bills, 3/25 @ 1:30PM: At this point we have heard a possibility of the House committee voting on the Senate Police Bills at this time. Keep this date in mind and we will be updating our website calendar as we learn more.

  • “Annapolis Lunch Break” on Mondays @ 12:15pm: Quaker Voice continues to host a virtual meet-up with Friends to touch base on the Action Alert for the week and then “go” take action. The meet-up should only take 10-15 minutes. If you are new to advocacy work or need a little extra support to feel confident to take the action, this meet up is for you!  Join us in Zoom –> https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85050569999 // Meeting ID: 850 5056 9999; info is also listed on our events calendar.

5th Night Light – Every Thursday evening

From 7:00 pm until 8:00 pm, the AFM community engages in a spiritual practice that acknowledges the Light of God within each person and that to be in community is to actively care for one another. During that time, Friends hold people and situations who need additional spiritual support in the Light. Friends will pause wherever they may be, read the list of names, and hold each person or situation in our hearts and in the Light. On Wednesday, the list of names or situations are sent out to the AFM-Announce list.
