Meetings for Learning

On March 14th at 9:15 am to 10:45 am the Ministry & Worship (M&W) Committee will host the Sacred Chant and Dance for the Meeting for Learning (MfL). This virtual meeting is designed to facilitate spiritual and personal growth. All are warmly invited to participate in AFM’s Sacred Chant & Dances. The dance is akin to the ancient traditions of various folk dances around the world. We dance together in a circle, often with hands joined (virtually), in easy movements with simple, repetitive chants. The circle provides that each person has a unique place, equal to one another, and at the same proximity to the Center. This is a symbol of our journey together, supporting and sustaining one another as a Community. After each dance/chant, we gently transition to a moment of stillness and silence as we open to the sweet awareness of the Divine within, between, and around us and all things

On March 28th at 9:15 am the Ministry & Worship Committee will be presenting the third in the series of the Introduction to Quakerism and the topic will be Contemporary Friends and Theological Diversity. There will be a lecture, video and slides for this presentation, as well as a question & answer session.

For more information, contact Ann R., at ministry@annapolisfriends.org.

Quaker Voice of Maryland

Updates for Week 8

  • We continue to keep our eye out for bill voting sessions – Bills need to be making moves by 3/16 to get voted out of committee and to the chamber floor. Final day of committee votes is the following week. We will be updating our priority bill list with voting dates and outcomes as they become known.
  • Climate Solutions Now was voted favorably (hooray!) out of both Senate committees and has made it to the Senate floor for a vote that could happen any time now. Stay tuned!
  • Police accountability legislation is still complicated – Bills were voted out of Senate committee with substantial amendments that take away from the impact of the bills and MD Coalition for Justice & Police Accountability held a rally this week in protest. We are reaching out to them about next steps to get the most effective police accountability legislation out of the House in the coming weeks and plan to update you as soon as we know more!

Updates as we look forward to Week 9 (3/8-3/12):

  • Action Alert – Week 9 (Link): Two bills this week need extra support to make sure they are scheduled and voted on in committee. One would reduce the abuse of solitary confinement and the other would restore local control of the Baltimore City Police Department to Baltimore City residents. The earlier you take action this week, the better! Action alert and more information can be found on our website: https://www.quakervoicemd.org/legislative-session
  • Extra Action Alerts w/ Committee Focus: The Climate Solutions Now bill and 5 Demands for Police Accountability bills both next extra support this week in their House committees (Economic Matters & Judiciary). Quaker Voice is drafting action alerts that we will be sending out to contacts that have representatives on these committees for some focused actions by constituents. That email will be going out on Tuesday and will also be posted on our website; stay tuned!
  • Advocacy & Action Bulletin Board (Link): Don’t forget to check out our bulletin board on the Quaker Voice homepage; this is updated regularly with events, advocacy/actions, and other resources that Friends share that may not directly relate to Quaker Voice priorities but is still valuable information for our community. Friends are welcome to add posts to the board too!
  • “Annapolis Lunch Break” on Mondays @ 12:15pm: Quaker Voice continues to host a virtual meet-up with Friends to touch base on the Action Alert for the week and then “go” take action. The meet-up should only take 10-15 minutes. If you are new to advocacy work or need a little extra support to feel confident to take the action, this meet up is for you!  If you are interested in joining here is the link to the Google Meeting –> https://meet.google.com/dcc-hsbq-bbg

5th Night Light – Every Thursday evening

From 7:00 pm until 8:00 pm, the AFM community engages in a spiritual practice that acknowledges the Light of God within each person and that to be in community is to actively care for one another. During that time, Friends hold people and situations who need additional spiritual support in the Light. Friends will pause wherever they may be, read the list of names, and hold each person or situation in our hearts and in the Light. On Wednesday, the list of names or situations are sent out to the AFM-Announce list.

For more information, contact Pastoral Care at pastoral-care@annapolisfriends.org.
